Sci-Friday: "The Hole in Reality's Heart" by DeMatteis, Newton, and Mitchell

Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! Here's a suh-weet sci-fi collaboration between three guys who truly knew how to make memorable comics, writer J.M. DeMatteis, penciler Don Newton, and inker Steve Mitchell. From DC's short-lived science-fiction comic Time Warp #4 (January 1980), here's "The Hole in Reality's Heart"!

Groove's Faves: "The Crawler in the Mists!" by Wein, Buscema, and Adams

The new Conan flick hits the big screen tomorrow, Groove-ophiles! Once more, Ol' Groove is hoping Hollywood treats a beloved character right. Whether the new flick is box-office gold or a total dud, one thing's for sure--I still have my Conan comics! Besides the magnificent Marvel issues produced during the Groovy Age, there's also this little-seen gem from Power Records--Conan: The Crawler in the Mists!

During the summer or '76, Young Groove was able to get his hands on a pretty good stockpile of Power Records' legendary comicbook/record combos. Most of the Marvel ones were reprints with voice acting, music, and sound effects added. Sometimes you'd run across something brand new--and this Conan record was probably the best of 'em all. Written by Len Wein (not Roy Thomas?!) with art by John Buscema and Neal Adams (!), how could I not love it?

While the comic in and of itself is far-out enough to warrant a "Thanks, Groove!" all by its lonesome, checking out a pulse-pounding Power Record isn't nearly as fulfilling an experience without getting to dig the awesome audio, as well. Click the "play" button and read along, baby!

Power Records, Conan - The Crawler in the Mist

While most of Marvel's Power Records offerings were reprints, this all-new saga was actually re-printed by Marvel Comics in Conan the Barbarian #116 (August 1980) with added pages by J.M. Dematteis and John Buscema. Even the splash page became the comicbook cover. Waste not, want not, by Crom!

Atlas Is Back--and So Is Ol' Groove!

What it is, Groove-ophiles! Did'ja miss me? Well, I'm back--easing back in (elbow's still swollen some, can't type for very long), but I can't stand it any longer! I miss my Groove-ophiles, so here I yam, baby!

My desire to come back was spurred by the recent news of the upcoming return of Atlas Comics! Wow, talk about news ya never saw coming! Here I've been rappin' about how crazy, cool, weird, and wonky those Groovy Age Atlas/Seaboard mags were, and lo and behold, Jason (Martin's grandson) Goodman announces that short-lived-but-well-remembered company's return. And what better way to return than with a super-hero who represents rebirth--The Phoenix? Toss in The Grim Ghost, a highwayman who cheats death (hmmmmmm, there's gotta be some kind of irony there) and ya got Ol' Groove's interest. I wish I knew more about who the creators are gonna be, but the fact that J.M. DeMatteis is editing the line gives me mucho hope. Meantime, I sure hope Ironjaw, Planet of Vampires, Morlock, Tiger-Man, The Destructor and especially Thrilling Adventure Stories aren't far behind. Stay tuned!

(P)Raising Kane: "The Saviors!"

What it is, Groove-ophiles! I'll tell ya what it is, it is time for a far-out and funky sci-fi classic illustrated by the great Gil Kane. "The Saviors!" is written by the awesome J.M. DeMatteis, don'tcha know. Let's bop on back to September, 1979 and peel back the cover to Time Warp #2!

Sci-Fi Week! Two-Fer Tuesday: Sci Fi by J. M. DeMatteis and Tom Sutton

Salutations, Stalwarts! Here's a couple shockers from DC's short-lived but so awesome sci-fi mag Time Warp. These two particular tales feature the stunningly haunting art of the vastly underrated Tom Sutton, who gave Steve Ditko and Basil Wolverton a run for their money when it came to drawing weeeeeird aliens. Not only that, but each story was written by the incredible J. M. DeMatteis, who would later go on acclaim with Captain America, Moonshadow, Justice League, "Kraven's Last Hunt", Abadazad, and so much more. Ready for a treat?
