Happy New Year's Eve, Groove-ophiles! It's time to sing "Auld Lang Syne" and reminisce about the year that was. Hope 2015 was good to ya, baby--and Ol' Groove hopes 2016 will treat ya even better! As has become our tradition, today's the day we say "so long" to one of our Groovy Age titles by looking back at their final ish. Well, this year it's
Metal Men #55 (November 1977). Since Metal Mondays was a hit with most of y'all, Ol' Groove thought their Groovy Age finale would be most fitting. (Yeah, I know it's not Monday, but hey, that's a good thing, right?)
It's a nice ending for the series, with a down-played, low-key guest appearance by the alter-ego of a certain Prince-ess tossed in for good measure. Ol' Groove think's you'll dig..."The Inheritor Kills!" by Gerry Conway and Joe Staton!

Have these stories ever been collected? I'd love to get a trade of just this stuff. A third Metal Men Showcase might fill the bill nicely.
ReplyDeleteRip Off
LO! THou shalt learn to read books without pictures! Boy, did Gerry Conway ruin my world of comics with Gwen Stacey's death, Franklin Richards becoming whatever he became that Reed had to deal with and Sue filing for divorce... No one man deserves more credit for getting me to the library to read books, I think, lol.
ReplyDeleteCount me among the fans of Metal Mondays. This book wasn't on my radar in the '70s, but I've been wanting to read these stories for some time now. With scripts by three of my favorite comic writers (Martin Pasko, Gerry Conway, and Steve Gerber), they did not disappoint. And Paul Levitz, another favorite, was the editor. I also enjoyed the inventive artwork of Walt Simonson and Joe Staton. I'm sorry to see this series come to an end, but it was great fun while it lasted.
ReplyDeleteYep, I think I've mentioned it before, but I snagged the whole set of this brief 1970s Metal Men run in around 1981 or so for about $2. I really loved it. And Rip, to answer your question, no it hasn't been collected, not all of it anyway. The issues drawn by Simonson appear in the Art of Walter Simonson tpb (which I have), but I agree with you that the entire run should be collected and reprinted - although I would prefer a color edition myself rather than a Showcase volume.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, thanks for posting all of these, Groove, and best to you in the New Year.
I often seen The Metal Men but never read any of their comic books. So recently this comic book shop was having a sale on graphic novels so I purchased this Volume 1 of The Metal Men from Showcase #37 - 40 and Metal Men #1 - 5. I'm half way through and I'm enjoying these Silver Age stories.
