Our Pal Sal: "Titan's Three!" by Thomas, S. Buscema, and Mooney

Merry Christmas, Groove-ophiles! 'Tis Christmas Eve and Ol' Groove is back to share an all-time favorite comicbook classic with you! Now, this one, Sub-Mariner #34, has no special Christmas-y memories (it came out, after all, in November 1970), but it does lead into tomorrow's look at #35 which did, indeed, come out in time for Christmas (around December 1 or so). The important thing, for now, is to spend some time together this Christmas Eve digging on the "prototype" Defenders--"The Titans Three!" with story and art by one of my early dream-teams, Roy Thomas, Sal Buscema, and Jim Mooney! Enjoy!

See you tomorrow for a special Christmas post! Happy Holidays!

Making a Splash: Ghost Rider--the First 13

What it is, Groove-ophiles! How about a look back at the stunning splashes from the first thirteen issues of The Most Supernatural Hero of All? Ghost Rider issues 1-13 featured art by gifted graphite gurus like Tom Sutton, Jim Mooney, Sal Buscema, Frank Robbins, and George Tuska (plus a reprinted splash by co-creator Mike Ploog) inked by an army of adroit ink artists! Check 'em out!

Oh, yeah, Groove-ophiles--if you're in the mood for more Ghost Rider splashes, you can see the fab first pages from each of GR's appearances in Marvel Spotlight (issues 5-11) right here!

Marvel-ous Monday: "Nighthawk's Brain!" by Gerber, S. Buscema, and Mooney

Greetings, Groove-ophiles! A mere 10 issues after their introduction (Defenders #31, October 1975), Steve Gerber finally went all out to unleash the horrible Headmen upon the dynamic Defenders! The weird factor ramps up to 150 (on a scale from 1 to 10) as Nighthawk is "possessed" by the mystic headman Chondu (who again uses drugs to enhance his mystical power!), Hulk "adopts" a baby deer, a certain Elf With a Gun makes an appearance, and Dr. Strange unleashes his full power...with dire results. Sal Buscema and Jim Mooney are a perfect art team for "grounding" the way-out proceedings of "Nighthawk's Brain!"
