Marvel-ous Monday: "It" by Sturgeon, Thomas, Severin, and Giacoia

Greetings, Groove-ophiles! Halloween is almost here, so let's kick off this week with classic Marvel adapting classic pulp--Theodore Sturgeon's "IT" from Supernatural Thrillers #1 (September 1972)! As Rascally Roy explains in the editorial (there it is, right under Ol' Groove's words), Marvel intended to do more classic and literary type "mystery" tales--not "horror" tales--with Supernatural Thrillers, and they did--at least for the first four issues. They also did H.G. Welles' "Invisible Man", Robert E. Howard's "Valley of the Worm", and Robert Louis Stevenson's "Dr. Jekyll and Mister Hyde" before the mag was taken over by the Living Mummy (with a single side-trip to give us a modern sequel to "The Headless Horseman"). This is one of the best--obviously a labor of love on writer/editor Thomas' part. First, here's Roy's editorial (as promised above)…

and now...get ready to get your creepy on!

Marvel-ous Monday: "Chaos at the Earth's Core!" by Wein and Kane

Greetings, Groove-ophiles! Here's the follow-up to last month's Spider-Man/Captain Mar-Vell team-up! This time, with Marv trapped in a giant gem (that had mysteriously disappeared), our favorite Wall Crawler called on Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic, to help track down our Kree Captain. They learn that Marv is the prisoner of the Mole Man, and the whole she-bang is tied up with the timely interruption by last month's villain, the Basilisk, and...mebbe you'd just better read this action-packed Len Wein/Gil Kane thriller for yourself, Groove-ophiles! From Marvel Team-Up #17 (October 1974)…"Chaos at the Earth's Core!"

Marvel-ous Monday: "Nighthawk's Brain!" by Gerber, S. Buscema, and Mooney

Greetings, Groove-ophiles! A mere 10 issues after their introduction (Defenders #31, October 1975), Steve Gerber finally went all out to unleash the horrible Headmen upon the dynamic Defenders! The weird factor ramps up to 150 (on a scale from 1 to 10) as Nighthawk is "possessed" by the mystic headman Chondu (who again uses drugs to enhance his mystical power!), Hulk "adopts" a baby deer, a certain Elf With a Gun makes an appearance, and Dr. Strange unleashes his full power...with dire results. Sal Buscema and Jim Mooney are a perfect art team for "grounding" the way-out proceedings of "Nighthawk's Brain!"
