Black and White Wednesday: "Voodoo Unto Others" by Isabella and Mortimer

Dig it, Groove-ophiles! Remember yesterday's Swamp Thing saga? Ol' Groove mentioned how the Comics Code didn't allow the use of the word "zombie?" Well, Marvel got around that little rule by publishing black and white mags. Especially the one called Tales of the Zombie! How literal is that title? Well the mag starred a zombie named Simon Garth, and ran lots of short back-up features mainly about voodoo and...zombies! Like this one from Tales of the Zombie #2 (June 1973) by Tony Isabella and Win Mortimer called "Voodoo Unto Others!"

Greetings, Groove-ophiles! How would ya like to plant your peepers on a far-out zombie tale weirdly written and awesomely illustrated by Tom Sutton? Yeah, Ol' Groove thought you might dig that. From Tales of the Zombie #10 (January 1975) here's "Grave Business"!

Black and White Wednesday: "Twin Burial" by Robinson and Reese

You dig zombies, Groove-ophiles? A lotta folks do these days (wonder why?), but back during the Groovy Age, the only place to get your zombie fix on a regular basis was Marvel's b&w Tales of the Zombie. Today's "Twin Burial", by Chuck Robinson and Ralph Reese, comes from Tales of the Zombie #2 (June 1973). Of course, it's not exactly a zombie story. Pre-zombie, perhaps? You decide!

Black and White Wednesday: "Introducing Brother Voodoo!" by Tony Isabella

Who is Brother Voodoo? Where did he come from? No, I don't mean in the comicbook uinverse, Groove-ophile--I'm talkin' 'bout the real world! Who came up with the name? The premise? The costume? Well, way back in Tales of the Zombie #2 (July 1973), Tony "the Tiger" Isabella gave us the lowdown on how the Marvel Bullpen developed one of the most maligned and misunderstood characters in Marvel history--and Ol' Groove's got that awesome article for ya right now!

Grooviest Covers of All Time: Iconic Boris Vallejo

What it is, Groove-ophiles! It suddenly hit me (when I realized that this past Saturday was his birthday) that Ol' Groove has overlooked the comicbook cover art of one of the greatest artists to ever apply paint to canvas--Boris Vallejo. To call Vallejo a legend would be like saying Neptune is a little far away. His book covers, art books, posters, etc. are known world-wide. Lots of folks forget, though, that during the early 70s Boris' handiwork graced the covers of many a Skywald, Warren, and Marvel black and white mag. Following are just a smattering of the more iconic pieces Boris produced for pulp posterity...

Yeah, I know. Tell your eyeballs they're welcome.

ITEM! Before signing off, Ol' Groove wants to pass along a couple of important links. Colorist Tom Ziuko has had major health problems which have cut into his ability to work. Doctor bills are piling up and the man could use a helping hand. Please consider donating a bit to the cause, Groove-ophiles. We always talk about how much we appreciate the folks who create our beloved comics--well, here's a chance to put those words into action. For the full story via Tom's pal (and a swell talent in his own right) Alan Kupperberg visit 20th Century Danny Boy.  If ya wanna go ahead and donate to the cause, you can send money via Alan's PayPal Account. Thanks, Groove-ophiles! You're the greatest!
