Fanciful Facts, Fun, and Foolishness for Friend and Foe Alike!

Hey, Kids! Comics from 50 Years Ago!
May 5 & 7, 1970

Groovy Age Splash Page of the Week

Groovy Age Spotlight On...
Hee Haw, the Comicbook!
Ol' Groove can't remember when an, um... not so good comic has gotten as much discussion as the cover pic of Hee Haw #1 did last week! Now, as I've said in last week's comments section, I really dug the show. The comic, though...well... at least Charlton tried. Here are a few pages from issues 3 and 5 (October 1970 and February 1971) where the Boys from Derby at least TRIED to capture some of the cornpone humor and actual content of the show. Oh, and you'll notice that Charlton also published (for a short time, natch) a Hee Haw magazine, as well.

Was someone at Chick-fil-A a Hee Haw comic fan?

Hoo-boy. Y'all had a lot to chew the fat about based on just the cover last week. I'm curious as a tom cat in a new barn to see what y'all have to say about this (Junior) sampling...

Happy Groovy Thanksgivings of Yore!

Some of Ol' Groove's favorite comics came out in November, and I've shared a whole lot of 'em here on the blog. In a weird bout of nostalgic nostalgia, Ol' Groove would like to help you (in the U.S.A) celebrate Thanksgiving (happy Thursday to the rest of the world!) with some of my most favorite faves that I've shared here with you in our past Thanksgiving Feasts! So, instead'a cooking to enjoy these tasty morsels of comicbook wonder, all ya have to do is click! Enjoy, Groove-ophiles!

Strange Tales #178 (Jim Starlin's Warlock epic begins!), The Destructor #1 (Archie Goodwin, Steve Ditko, and Wally Wood give us a most unexpected super-hero), and Scorpion #1 (Howard Chaykin's pulp-hero supreme)! Click here to read 'em all!

Ol' Groove's all-time favorite ish of Creepy! Read the best of this issue's best here, here, and here!

Marvel's greatest one-shot mag featuring early solo tales starring The Punisher and (Howard Chaykin's "reboot" of Scorpion) Dominic Fortune and the twin debuts of The Huntress (better known as Bobbi Morse/Mockingbird) and Weirdworld!

A special (or should I say Super Special) "issue" of Savage Sword of Conan in full color!

And finally, one of the best b&w comic mags of all time! The debut of Tigerman, Lawrence of Arabia...The Sting of Death...and Escape from Nine by 1!

Black and White Wednesday: Wally Wood's Unpublished Plop-ular Poetry

You Groove-ophiles are absolutely the greatest! So kind, loyal, and generous! Gil Oritz, co-worker, friend, and photographer of the late, great Wally Wood read our old post on Woody's Plop-ular Poetry from DC's PLOP! mag and not only answered Ol' Groove's question ("I wonder if  poems "v"-"z" were ever completed? "), but shared the wealth, as well! Seems Woody had gifted Gil with the original art for the unpublished "V-Z" sections--and Gil has graciously shared scans of those long-lost (to fandom, not Gil) pages. Thank you a ka-zillion, Gil!! Thine unselfishness has earned thee the highest accolades that Groove City mayest bestow! We tip our kreighblas to thee, Sir!

Decent Comics: "The Master Plan of Vandal Savage" by Levitz and Wood

Dig it, Groove-ophiles! Before he became a TV star on Legends of Tomorrow, Vandal Savage was the arch-enemy of The Justice Society (and, for a short while, the All Star Super-Squad). Here he is taking on the whole JSA in "The Master Plan of Vandal Savage" by Paul Levitz and (in his final JSA outing) Wally Wood. Let's truck on back to December 1976 and pull All Star Comics #65 from the Spinner Rack of the Awesome...
