Yesterday was the 84th anniversary of the birth of the great Tony DeZuniga, Groove-ophiles! In Savage Sword of Conan #56 (July 1980), we got to se a bee-yoo-tee-ful DeZuniga portfolio featuring Conan (natch) and Red Sonja (cool!). Ol' Groove thought that portfolio would serve as an appropriate tribute to Tony's titanic talents!

Love Tony's art, inking a true great man. Miss him very much, so happy I'm lucky enough to own some of his original artwork. That he was so kind to sign for me & his wife Tina who repacked them up twice. And married them back to me. I just wish I had known Tony decades earlier. Happy Birthday Tony!!
ReplyDeleteHappy belated birthday to the late great Tony DeZuniga! Truly one of the greats, and along with Big John one of my favourite Conan artists!
ReplyDelete- Mike from Trinidad & Tobago.
Fantastic art by the late Tony DeZuniga. The Red Sonja piece is my favorite. You could always count on SSOC for great artists, and Tony was one of the best, from an age when artists weren't afraid to execute textures (especially cross-hatching) with lines and ink.
ReplyDeleteI met Tony DeZuniga in 2010 for the first time at Emerald City Comicon. He was such a nice guy, talking away about comics, Kansas City (where I'm from and he has relatives) and his artwork. He graciously signed 15 comics free of charge. Two years later he gone, along with Ernie Chan. I'm glad I had the opportunity to talk to this giant of the Groovy Age, whose inking and art added so much to my life.
