Making a Splash: Rose and The Thorn

Happy Friday, Groove-ophiles! Today let's check out the superior splashes of the only back-up that ever made me buy issues of Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane--Rose and The Thorn! R&T ran for most of issues 105-130 (August 1970-February 1973; one ish, #113, was an all-reprint giant/annual; The Thorn guest-starred in  team-ups with Lois in issues 105, 114 and 122). Robert Kanigher wrote most of the stories, while artists like the team of Ross Andru and Mike Esposito, Gray Morrow, Dick Giordano, Rich Buckler (some of his earliest super-hero work), and Don Heck. Since they're back-ups, few of them had "traditional" splashes, but we got some really cool ones, so who cares? Enjoy!

The Grooviest Covers of All Time: Lois Just Wants to Get Married

That's all Ol' Groove can say about these covers, baby. During the early Groovy Age, before she got heavily into Women's Lib (and let's face it, even after), Superman's Girlfriend just wanted to be somebody's wife. Lois didn't seem to care whose wife, just so long as she got a ring! I mean...the Devil? Sheesh! At least we had guys like Neal Adams, Curt Swan, Dick Giordano, and Bob Oksner to draw these kooky-kool kovers!

Welcome back to Groove City! Today we're digging one of the rapturous reprints from DC's twenty-five cent, fifty-two page era of 1971/72--Dr. Pat! Who dat? Why, Dr. Pat was part of the "new" Sensation Comics (#94) of November/December, 1949, which dumped all the male superheroes and replaced them with romance strips and female adventurers. So you're gettin' not only the intro, but also the origin of Dr. Pat courtesy the middle of Lois Lane #116 (September 1971). Written by Robert Kanigher with art by Carmine Infantino and Frank Giacoia (the Golden Age Black Canary dream team, baby!), here's the debut of Dr. Pat in "A Cure for Romance"!
