Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! For a short-but-sweet time, Marvel's Monster-Master, Mike Ploog, took over the penciling chores of Kull the Destroyer (11-15, August 1973-May 1974), and man, was it dyn-o-mite! Wanna see for yourself? You got it, baby!
And yeah, a couple'a those pages aren't splashes--but, man, aren't they far-out?

Special thanks to Mike's Amazing World of Comics and Grand Comics Database for being such fantastic resources for covers, dates, creator info, etc. Thou art treasures true!

As for the rest of ya, the purpose of this blog is to (re)introduce you to the great comics of the 1970s. If you like what you see, do what I do--go to a comics shop, bookstore, e-Bay or whatever and BUY YOUR OWN!

The qualitative difference between Ploog's own inks and everybody else is stupefying. I guess Chiaramonte was okay on Werewolf, but some of these other guys mask all of the sweet Ploog-ness to the point of making it look generic. Ernie Chua (Chan) is great and so is Ploog, but together it's like topping an ice cream sundae with spaghetti sauce.
ReplyDeletePloog is awesome!
ReplyDeleteGood stuff, but I reckon Ploog did his best work at Marvel in the black-and-whites - he did a particularly good Kull story for Savage Sword of Conan, and it would have been great to see something from that here alongside the colour pages.
ReplyDeleteBut maybe the whole thing is being saved for a B&W Wednesday post sometime.....?
