Decent Comics: "The Swami and...the Spectre" by Fleisher and Aparo
Dig it, Groove-ophiles! 'Tis no secret that one of Ol' Groove's all-time favorite series is Michael Fleisher (aided by Russell Carley) and Jim Aparo's Spectre from Adventure Comics. "Grim and Gritty" before it became a trend (and much more interesting than any g&g that came after), the Spirit of Vengeance laid down the law--and took out the bad-guys! Here's a classic from Adventure Comics #433 (February 1974): "The Swami and...the Spectre!"

Making a Splash: Neal Adams' Spectre
Greetings, Groove-ophiles! Ol' Groove knows how we are. When we think of Groovy Age Neal Adams at DC, we think Batman and Deadman. When we think The Spectre, we think (Golden Age) Bernard Baily or (Groovy Age) Jim Aparo. But what about that oh-so-short time (issues 2-5, November 1967-May 1968) Nefarious Neal drew The Spectre? Anyone who picked those mags up definitely had their minds blown, baby! The following Spectre-acular splashes simply smash any spooky, spectral images that had come sooner...see?
Can you dig it?

We're gonna finish off the week (man, I should'a made this a month--barely scratched the proverbial surface!) with a whole mess of Ol' Groove's fave Adventure Comics covers from the Groovy Age. I may have used one or four of these masterpieces in other posts, but what the hey--I love 'em! Hope you do, too!
(Thanx to the GCD for the always far-out cover scans!)

Making a Splash: Jim Aparo's Spectre
One of the all-time great horror-superhero series was Michael Fleisher and Jim Aparo's Spectre revamp that ran in Adventure Comics #'s 431-440 (October 1973-April 1975). A lot of folks forget, however, that while Aparo inked every tale, three of the Ghost of Jim Corrigan's tales were penciled by other folks--one by Frank Thorne and two by Ernie Chan (then under the pseudonym Ernie Chua). While Jim's inks are powerful enough to make the other two artists' singular penciling style a perfect fit for the series, there are subtle differences. Can you pick the three fill-ins out of this stack o'splashes? (Without cheating and looking at the credits, that is?) Enjoy!
