Bring On the Back-ups: "The Curse of the Ancient Weapons!" by Bridwell and Garcia-Lopez

Greetings, Groove-ophiles! Here's a neat little gem from the back pages of Detective Comics #452 (July 1975). "The Curse of the Ancient Weapons!" was written by the late E. Nelson Bridwell, so you know it's going to be one of those charming Silver Age style potboilers. The oh-so-gorgeous art is by the criminally underrated Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez. Dig this cool factoid, baby: it's Garcia-Lopez's superhero debut! I ain't jivin'! Up until this point in his career, J. L. had done tons of romance work for Charlton, dabbled in mystery/horror at Charlton and Gold Key, and was just getting started at DC--in fact, this is only his second DC job (the first was ish #41 of Weird War Tales). Okay, the history lesson is over! Let's get on wit da comix!

  1. lovely stuff. sometimes, I forget that Jose's been around as long as he has. his work always looks so wonderfully fresh and exciting. the man runs rings around so many of other artists, and he's never got the big ups he deserves. yet anotrher cracker from the House of Groove!
