Random Reads: "The Siege of Lortnan Manor" by Michelinie, Vosburg, and Colletta

What it is, Groove-ophiles! I can't believe it's been nearly two years since I rapped about David Michelinie and Mike Vosburg's wonderful Starfire, but it has! Time to rectify that particular sitch right here and now! "The Siege of Lortnan Manor", from Starfire #2 (July 1976) and inked by Vinnie Colletta, is a true tale of triumph and tragedy! Starfire and her rebel band bring the battle to the baddies,  but as always, victory comes at a high price. Dig it!

  1. Great post! I have to say, I was never the biggest fan of Vosburg's art (especially at Marvel, it often looked as though he was phoning it in), but as far as I recall, his work on throughout the Starfire series was really strong - I'm almost tempted to say inspired. In this issue in particular, even Colletta's inks aren't too overpowering.

  2. If I recall, Vosburg adapted a pretty serious Chaykin-style by the late 80s, sort-of like what Mike Nassar and Bill Sienkiewicz were to Neal Adams during the early parts of their careers. Anybody know why?

  3. Vosburg has a thriving website - maybe he'll have an answer for you. I was a serious fan of Jose Luis Garcia Lopez until he illustrated a Twilight mini-series that Chaykin wrote and, since then, Lopez's art features a heavy Chaykin style that I do not appreciate, although I love Chaykin's style when it is where it should be: Chaykin's art. I think Vosburg, besides being a damn good storyteller, really liked drawing the idealized female form and it showed. Check out his Linda Lovecraft stuff from the mid-70s as published in Mike Friedrich's "Star Reach" and "Imagine" and then later newly published in the 90s as Lori Lovecraft, where he lost some of the Chaykin vibe (thank god). Neither Lopez nor Vosburg needed the Chaykin influence - they're great artists on their own. - Jeff Clem

  4. Thanks for introducing yet another great obscure scifi title. I came across this blog a few weeks ago and now it's become a regular part of my day. Having outgrown the superhero genre many moons ago my interests are strictly in the fantsy/sci-fi genres of any decade..... Are there any other forgotten sci-fi gems to come? Gosh I hope so.

  8. Amazing that no artist or inker could pretty up females better than the infamous Vinnie Colletta!
