Black and White Wednesday: Who Won..."The Great Superman Movie Contest"? by Mike Gold

Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! Remember way back in the Summer of 1977 when DC ran the following blurb on all of their covers...

...and this contest form in every mag?

Remember contest pieces like these adorning DC's letter's pages during that fateful summer?

All you had to do was collect enough letters to spell S-U-P-E-R-M-A-N and either C-L-A-R-K or K-A-L-E-L and you could be in Superman: the Movie!

Ever wonder what happened to the two Grand Prize winners? Well, The Amazing World of DC Comics (issue #16, dated December 1977) gave us the lowdown courtesy writer Mike Gold. Read all about it!!

Couldn't resist throwing in this pic of our Superman, Christopher Reeve!

  1. Did those two kids actually make it into the movie? Were they just "kids in the crowd" without any lines?

  2. I had a line - when we ran past Clark Kent as the 'water boy/team manager' of the football team (he was wearing a red shirt), I dropped my helmet with my right hand, spun around and said "See you later, Clark!" and ran off with the rest of the football team. If you crank the audio way up you can hear it. You can tell the two of us who won because we go by together in gray football sweats, while the rest of the team (a real high school football team) are in maroon with numbers (one other guy is in gray, but he goes by alone. his stuff was in the wash?). - Ed Finneran. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1105138/?ref_=fn_nm_nm_32

As for the rest of ya, the purpose of this blog is to (re)introduce you to the great comics of the 1970s. If you like what you see, do what I do--go to a comics shop, bookstore, e-Bay or whatever and BUY YOUR OWN!
