"The Beast from the Bog!"

You've heard of the Heap, Glob, Swamp-Thing, and Man-Thing, but Ol' Groove'll just about bet you missed (or forgot) "The Beast from the Bog" from Chamber of Darkness #5 (March 1970)! Just a toss-off by Denny O'Neil and Paul Reinman with a sci-fi twist, but still worth adding to the muck-caked catalog . Swamp fever must'a been running rampant in the early 70s, eh, Groove-ophiles?

  1. Hey Groove, this is a re-telling of a Lee/Ditko tale called "The Creature of the Black Bog," originally appearing in Tales of Suspense #23 (1961), and reprinted in Monsters on the Prowl #19 (1972).

    Thanks for posting it!

  2. Hey, I was going to say that, Mark. Well, except for including the actual story name, where it appeared, and where it had been reprinted.

Fun to see different handlings of the same story. I remember in One of the Marvel horror comics of this period there was one story where Kirby did a version, and the next issue or so Adkins did a version. Seemed very strange to me at the time -- I would think a kid buying both would feel ripped off, even though an older fan might find the comparison to be fun.

As for the rest of ya, the purpose of this blog is to (re)introduce you to the great comics of the 1970s. If you like what you see, do what I do--go to a comics shop, bookstore, e-Bay or whatever and BUY YOUR OWN!
