Sunday Funnies: Archie in "Flake Off!"

This winter has been quite snowy for most of us here in the U.S. of A. (NWS reported snow on the ground in 49 of the 50 states on February 12!), so before it all winds down and Spring springs upon us, let's take a laugh-filled look at how good ol' Mr. Weatherbee handles a day filled with fluffy flakes! From Archie #216 (December 1971) here's "Flake Off!"...

  1. Wow, thanks for posting that! I have vivid memories of this story from my childhood, and now thanks to you I know the year it's from. I'm always trying to decide when I got my first comics and I usually come up with '72 or '73, but I distinctly remember getting this one off a spinner rack when it was new. Which takes my collecting start date to at least 1971, at 6 years of age.

It's funny that the thing I remember most is that pitiful two-hair toupee hopping around on Mr Weatherbee's dome. Only at that age I didn't know what a toupee was, so I kept wondering why he didn't notice there was a spider living on his head. :-)

Again, it's helpful putting this in the same time frame as Kirby's Jimmy Olsen (which I go back and forth on -- did I buy it new or get old copies from my older friends?) I remember being confused about why that red-haired, freckled kid had such a silly-fun school life, only to be chased by terrifying four-armed monsters in his off hours. It took me a while to realize Jimmy and Archie were two different guys.

As for the rest of ya, the purpose of this blog is to (re)introduce you to the great comics of the 1970s. If you like what you see, do what I do--go to a comics shop, bookstore, e-Bay or whatever and BUY YOUR OWN!
