Here's a fave, Groove-ophiles! "Humble Howie" illustrates a Groovy Age pulp story in comicbook form written by Golden/Silver Age great Gardner Fox and inked by the magnificent Joe Sinnott. From Chamber of Chills #4 (February 1973), here's "The Demon from Beyond!"

ReplyDeleteWhatever imperfections in Chaykin's earliest work from 1972-1976, Chaykin right from the jump was able to draw really beautiful women. Some early examples include this story, his Ironwulf series in WEIRD WORLDS 8-10, and his Killraven work in AMAZING ADVENTURES 18-19, and SWORD OF SORCERY 1-4.
ReplyDeleteThe above story (that Groove was kind enough to post for us here) was only Chaykin's 6th published story.

I think Chaykin did better on stand-alone stories than he did for series runs like in CONAN THE BARBARIAN 79-83, STAR WARS and MICRONAUTS 13-18.
In particular I like his work of Robert E Howard characters like Solomon Kane and Red Sonja. And his pulp-ish work on THE SCORPION, and Dominic Fortune in BIZARRE ADVENTURES and HULK magazines. That was the point I thought Chaykin really hit his stride artistically.
