Metal Monday: "The Chemo Conspiracy" by Conway and Simonson
Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! We're back with more of the 1976 Metal Men revival! Thanks to info from Groove-ophiles in-the-know (thanx Russ and Jeff), we learned that MM #45 was a proposal that collected dust 'til publisher Carmine Infantino wisely gave it a shot. It did well, he ordered up a series and viola! The Metal Men were back! Steve Gerber was busy back at Marvel (something about a duck?), so editor Gerry Conway took over the scripting chores for MM #46 (March 1976). Everyone was really stoked that Uncle Walt Simonson was still available to pencil/ink (and even letter) ish 46! And they were bringing back Chemo! I can dig it! Can you dig it?

Wow, Groove, the hits just keep on coming!
ReplyDeleteThis revived series in the 1970s has my favorite Metal Men stories - yep, that's right, I like 'em better than the classic Kanigher/Andru stuff from the 1960s. And the art was top-notch: first Simonson, followed by Joe Staton, who didn't miss a beat.
Thank you,Mr Groove,for sharing!
ReplyDeleteMr Simonson is dy-no-mite!
Cheers!

p.s.Yes! I dig it!
Thanks for the Metal Men (and Girl), I didn't know this series, but yes, I dig it!
ReplyDeleteThose were the days, those were the robots! And at last, one comic with some lines in a correct Italian.
I was a big Marvel fan in the 70's. Loved to see that gun - totin' Deathlok cover again here in your archives. Deathlok was called "Cybernus" in Italy. Nice name, don't you think? Love also the "plop" hint: the series looks quite comedic, though the MM keep on dying.
I've always loved this issue! Especially the bit with the old guy pounding on the gem with a hammer.
ReplyDeleteI really prefer Steve Gerber's writing the issue before (maybe because he is a way-better wordsmith than Gerry Conway), and most of Conway's stuff bores me, but this is loose, funny, silly Conway and it's pretty darn fine right next to Simonson's great art. - Jeff Clem
