Grooviest Covers of All Time: Dr. Doom

One of the greatest Marvel villains of all time is, without a doubt, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's immortal Victor Von Doom, aka Dr. Doom. While Doom was created to be the Fantastic Four's arch-enemy, it turned out he couldn't get along with anyone in the whole blamed Marvel Universe! Dig these covers (with art by some of the all-time greatest), and you'll see Ol' Groove ain't jivin' ya, baby!

  1. That Sub-mariner cover is interesting. 'Ol Gil kane was never afraid to try unusual poses or camera angles. I think my favorite Doom image is the Romita painted cover for the paperback collection "Bring on the Bad Guys." Even though it's a group shot, Doom has that regal stance and gives off the most menace.

  2. Hey Groovyone!

You forgot to post a FF cover! My vote for the best dr.Doom FF cover. Has to go to the kirby/Sinnott Giant figure of Doc Doom towering over the village with the FF below. Dr.Von Doom is Marvel's greatest villain! I give second place to the Green Goblin! Hey where's my No Prize? I want my Dr.Doom Marvel money!

The FF cover I'm thinking of is from FF#84!

  5. Hey, Groove:

Nice selections here. I've always loved that Kirby Avengers cover; I think it's the odd perspective that makes it work so well. The Super-Villain Team-Up is another favorite (though it's really hard to go from the Byrne/Austin cover to the interior art on this one) I'd also suggest a couple of the Doom covers from Byrne's FF run for this list; there were some great ones!

  6. "Thor" 182 was my second ever Marvel comic, and the first bought with my own money. My mother had found an older issue of the Fantastic Four featuring Doom a couple of years earlier. When I saw this same diabolical character featured with someone called Thor (I was/am a great fan of the Norse myths), it was an instant sale!

By coincidence, the current issue of Thor, #604 (!), looks to feature a return match between the Thunder God and the ruler of Latveria...

  7. Some lovely covers there, Groove.
( Although I don't think Luke Cage would have lasted 5 minutes against ol' Victor! )

It may not qualify as Groovy Age material but I've always liked the cover to Iron Man # 150. These days I think I'd be on Doom's side :-)

  9. Tim: I almost used the Bring on the Bad Guys cover, but I have other plans for that terrific tome.

Mike: I didn't forget the FF; the point of the post was non-FF covers. I'll do an FF/Doom post, though, promise! Hang in there, Groove-ophile!

Andrew: when I revive Blinded Me with Comics, a Byrne/FF post is a must!

  10. Groove:

That's right, I keep forgetting Diversions is exclusively '70s comics. Duh!

  11. Yup; the Daredevil cover's my favourite of that lot and I'm with Cerebus on the Luke Cage thing. No disrespect to Luke but I can't for the life of me think how he could possibly beat Doom. If he did, I can only assume Victor must have been having an off-day.
