The Grooviest Covers of All Time: The Gemini Dream Team

Detroit pals Jim Starlin and Al Milgrom broke into Marvel Comics at about the same time and often teamed up for some extremely magnificent and memorable comix art. Mags like Captain Marvel, Master of Kung Fu, and Strange Tales (featuring Warlock, natch) often featured Jim penciling and Al inking one masterpiece or another. And their covers! Yowza, the classic covers that dyn-o-mite duo of MoTown mavericks produced. You'll no doubt notice that some of these classic covers are signed "Gemini"--Al's witty play on the fact that the art was by Jim and Al--"Jim and I"--get it? Now dig it!

(And no, your eyes don't deceive you, the hand of art director Jazzy John Romita has moved over a few of the faces. That's Groovy Age Marvel for ya!)

  2. Dig that girlie bouffant hairdo!

I admit I wasn't a fan of Jim Starlin's over-muscular artwork and I know that places me in a minority.

  3. I've always thought that the romita raiders changed the look on Matt and the widow on the DD #107 cover, but i've never seen the original to check it out. Does anyone know if it still exists?

  4. Pretty sure that Kull cover was inked by Starlin, not Milgrom.

  5. Actually, on Captain Marvel 29, Romita completely REDREW CM's face, something that he supposedly regretted for years and eventually caused Starlin to leave the book. JR was known to be a heavy-handed Art Director, but that was a pretty ridiculous change.

As for the rest of ya, the purpose of this blog is to (re)introduce you to the great comics of the 1970s. If you like what you see, do what I do--go to a comics shop, bookstore, e-Bay or whatever and BUY YOUR OWN!
