Making a Splash: Don Newton's World's Finest SHAZAM! Splashes

Yeah, the title just about says it all, Groove-ophiles! From issues 253 (July 1978) through 270  (May 1981)and issues 272-282 (July 1981-May 1982) of World's Finest Comics, you could count on a tasty dose of SHAZAM! with elegant Don Newton art on all but the final strip. It was nice to have something--and someone--to count on in those days of here today, gone tomorrow creators. And Newton's style was gor-gee-ous. Today is the 27th anniversary of Don's untimely passing. RIP, Don. And thanks for the great memories!

  1. I love Don Newton. I always feel that his moody, old-school art was better suited to The Phantom and Aquaman, though than to Captain Marvel.

  2. I LOVE Newton's work on the Marvel family -- he brought something to it that no other artist had. Thanks for this -- it made my day!

  3. I always used to get Gene Colan and Don Newton mixed up-- I don't know their history, but they certainly seem to be part of the same family tree.

  4. This makes me want to go and reread those stories yet again...but in fairness, I often do.

The concept that it's been twenty-seven years already is just hard to wrap my head around. There were so many more great comics from both Don and Nelson that they never had a chance to create...

  6. It was Newton's artwork on Avengers Annual #9 that made me a fan of the artist. As well the Avengers issue with Yellow Claw.

These splashes are fantastic. Thanks for posting them.

  7. I'd like to see big, black and white showcase volumes of anything and everything Don Newton ever did for DC. I can't believe it's been 27 years.

  8. Don't forget the last two Don Newton SHAZAM! stories were in the first two DIGEST issues of ADVENTURE COMICS!

    Adventure Comics #491 September 1982
    "The Confederation of Hell"
    Adventure Comics #492 October 1982
    "Battle with the Gods"
