Making a Splash: Sal Buscema's Sub-Mariner

Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! One of the earliest regular gigs bestowed upon Our Pal Sal Buscema was penciling Sub-Mariner from issues 25-36 (February 1970-January 1971). Inked by the likes of Jim Mooney, Mike Esposito (as Joe Gaudioso), and a young Bernie Wrightson (!), 'tis no wonder Sal quickly became one of Marvel's best and most dependable pencilers. His ability to draw just about every Marvel character and keep 'em in character (Subby enjoyed a lotta guest-stars during Sal's tenure) led him to major gigs on team and team-up mags throughout the Groovy Age. We love ya, Sal!

  1. Sal Buscema is one of my all time favorite illustrators. He was reliable, sleek & clean artwork.Loved how he drew "people on the street" and posed his subjects. Capt.America, the Defenders and Namor were all my favorites due to Sal B.

  4. For my money, Sam Grainger was Sal's best inker - those Avengers are still highlights for me

  5. Man Groovester you hit a home run right outta the MU with this one! Sal is way over looked by many older fans. They don't look at the massive body of work & in record time. That he took on & pumped out for years. His Subby blew me away! My favorite issues he did were of course Red Raven, Hercules & the first appearance of the Defenders vs the awesome Avengers at that time!

I mean what a line up! History was indeed made in those two issues! Subby teamed up with the Not so Jolly Green Giant & a cosmic Sufer Dude Fer Sure! Only to take on the Mighty Thor, the Golden Avenger & Goliath in his coolest costume! Subby had such great talent on his series. John Buscema, Marie Severin, Sal, Bill Everett & John Romita SR just to name a few! Everything Sal drew was gold! You need to add Awesome! & Totally Awesome!! to your reaction ratings!
