Grooviest Covers of All Time: Jack Returns to Kover Some of His Ko-Kreations

When Jack Kirby returned to Marvel in late 1975, he refused to return to penciling any of his Marvel  ko-kreations except for Captain America (and later Black Panther). The King did, however, provide some kool kovers right outta the gate! Here's the earliest batch of Marvel's kovers from Jack's riotous return!

  1. As I pointed out on a post of mine not too long ago, the Marvel Premiere cover looks like a '60s drawing because of Vinnie's inks, who managed to 'subdue' some of Jack's later abstract idiosyncracies. The Thor cover is also nice, but ol' Goldilock's figure looks like it's been retouched - possibly by Gil Kane, on the evidence of Thor's right hand.

  2. Oh wow, I have that FF issue, the Jungle Action issue and the Avenger Annual and I never realized Kirby did any of these. The Jungle Action issue is one of my favorite covers.

  3. Where did Kirby find the time to illustrate so many covers and produce 2001,the Eternals,Devil Dinosaur, Bl. Panther & Capt.America ? He seemed to be drawing more covers at this juncture of his career than at any previous stint with Marvel/Atlas.

  4. The Black Panther figure looks redrawn as well. As does the Hulk. You do wonder why they even bothered asking him as there seems to be a lot of work done to 'correct' his work.
Kirby's version of the Vision is always hysterical - really blocky and stiff, and a character I don't think he ever drew previously.

    1. I'm right with you on the Kirby Vision. It would have been interesting to see Kirby follow through on the Avengers #158 cover and draw the entire Vision/Wonder Man fight, just out of curiosity. His Vision reminds me a lot of Barry Smith's work on the character in #s 66-67.

  5. Those covers are awesome - I like all of them! But The Avengers one has to be my favorite of the lot, and I think it would make an excellent poster!

Why did Kirby refuse to do the pencils for any of his co-creations I wonder? Was he just burnt out on them?

    1. I don't think Kirby wanted to draw anything he wasn't writing, so Captain America and, later, Black Panther were the only character he returned to when he re-joined Marvel in the 1970s.

  6. Amazingly, I still have all of these comics. And, I don't get the redrawing of Jack's art, either. Like DC with with Curt Swan redoing Jack's Superman faces. That's a diss to me. He's the king.
