Random Reads: "Labyrinth of the Grotto Minotaur!" by Uslan, Estrada, and Villamonte

Greetings, Groove-ophiles! We're gonna start our week with an ending--the final issue of DC's Beowulf mag! This final ish was a lot like most other issues, magic, monsters, barbarians, pretty girls. It was written by Michael Uslan as was every issue. The big difference is that regular artist Ricardo Villamonte didn't do his own layouts, they were handled by Ric Estrada. Villamonte did finish and ink the "Labyrinth of the Grotto Minotaur!" as well as provide the cover. Here ya go, Beowulf #6 (November 1976)!

Random Reads: "Man-Apes and Magic!" by Uslan and Villamonte

Greetings, my Groovy Ghoulies! Halloween is almost upon us, so Ol' Groove thought we might kick the week off with a classic Beowulf yarn by Michael Uslan and Ricardo Villamonte! "Man-Apes and Magic!" from Beowulf #3 (May 1975) has all the cool spooky stuff! Monsters! Demons! Savages! But I gotta level with ya--the only "man-apes" I can find in this story are in the title! Kooky, huh?

Amazed by Aparo: "The Feud" by Skeates and Aparo

Greetings, Groove-ophiles! Today we're gonna gaze on some early Jim Aparo artwork from the back pages of Charlton's Hercules #1 (July 1967). Thane of Bagarth was written by Steve Skeates, set in the days of King Beowulf and read a whole lot like a companion strip to Prince Valiant. Skeates' stories were (as always) intriguing, and Aparo's art was a joy to behold. Check it out!

Man, wouldn't it have been cool to have seen JA take on Conan? Oh, the missed opportunities!

Far-Out Fantasy Week! Random Reads: "Slave Maid of Satan!" by Uslan and Villamonte

Greetings, Groove-ophiles! Let's kick this Far-Out Fantasy Week off with some of the far-out strangeness that was DC's Beowulf! Writer Michael Uslan and artist Ricardo Villamonte gave this mag their all, filling it with literary references, mythology, fantasy, and a wild, unrestrained energy that kept this mag on Young Groove's radar for its all too short five issue run. From Beowulf #2 (March 1975), here's "Slave Maid of Satan!"
