Groove's Faves: "The Lord of Tyndall's Quest!" by Moench, Ploog, and Nino

What it is, Groove-ophiles! Ol' Groove's celebrating a birthday this coming Friday, so I thought I'd be totally selfish and do a whole week's worth of some of my fave comics. Hope ya dig it!

Like many of my generation, Ol' Groove got his mind blown by the works of the great J.R.R. Tolkien at the tender age of 13. Those giant volumes were quite daunting for someone who had cut his teeth on pulp reprints and Ron Goulart (great author, short novels), but they were worth it. When Marvel came up with their answer to The Lord of the Rings, Weirdworld in Marvel Super-Action #1 (which you can read here), I dug it. But when Doug Moench and Mike Ploog's far-out fantasy (with inks by Alex Nino!) hit the pages of Marvel Premiere #38 (July 1977)...all I can say is I flipped. I still dearly love this mag and rank it high on the list of "best comics ever". If you've read it before, I'm betting you dig it, too. If you've never had the pleasure--man, are you in for a ta-reat!

  3. Absolutely, Joe. It's got all the humour and charm sadly missing from warriors of the shadow realm. Sigh. Weirdworld coulda' been great.
