Grooviest Covers of All Time: Mike Nasser

Not only is Michael Netzer (formerly known as Mike Nasser) of the nicest, friendliest, and most talented comicbook artists to come down the pike, he's also one of the most criminally underutilized talents of the Groovy Age. His art is hip, in-your-face, innovative, and most excellently stylized. I remember grabbing every mag in which I could find his art, ranking him with other new and exciting talents like Rogers, Perez, Giffen, and Byrne. The real crime is that neither Marvel nor DC turned Michael Netzer loose on more covers! Those he did work on were fab-a-mundo. Just take a look-see for yourself, Groove-ophiles!

  1. He did half a Marvel Team up that had Spiderman with Nightcrawler and it had some really cool, Neil-Adams-esque layout that made the second half by Rich Buckler look like weak tea. If he had come on the scene ten years later, he would've been part of the Image gang along with Jim Lee, McFarlene, etc. He had great chops all around.

  2. "Criminally underutilized" - couldn't have put it better myself. And I still vividly remember pulling those last two covers off of the spinner rack. Too bad Nasser/Netzer never got a gig on a regular Spidey book...

  5. Looking good! The second Challengers and the Shazam are a little busy, but still dramatic and appealing. I love the Kobra one. Strong concept, well-developed! All of them show you gotta have lots of danger to draw in the readers!

  6. Don't forget Wonder Woman 231-232! Mike Nasser was all kinds of awesome!

  8. You should try to track down a copy of Power Records featuring Wonder Woman. It has some great Continuity Studios work and the story "Amazons From Space" looks very much like Mike Nasser's work with Dick Giordano inks.
