Marvel-ous Mondays: "The Altar of the Flaming God!" by Thomas, J. Buscema, and DeZuniga

Greetings, Groove-ophiles! We're back with ish #3 of Marvel's Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle (May 1977), and, dare I say you might just go ape for it? (No, I should not say that...oops. I just did...) In "The Altar of the Flaming God", Roy Thomas, John Buscema, and Tony DeZuniga bring us deeper into their adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar. Best of all, we finally get to see Big John's version of (ooooh, la) La! Plenty of mystery, intrigue, action, hidden treasures, and savages in this one, baby! And how 'bout that Big John/Dave Cockrum cover? Whoo!

  1. DeZuniga always brought a great finish to John Buscema's pencils (their Thor collaboration was tres magnifique). I prefer this to his inking of himself which started off the series.

  2. I'm such a fan of Joe Kubert's defining rendition of the Ape Man that I sometimes forget what a stellar job Big John Buscema did on the book when Marvel launched it. It's a shame he couldn't ink himself all the time and stay on it for its full run.
