As you no doubt already know, Adam West passed away this past Friday. He was 88 years old. Years ago, I wrote a post to celebrate his 80th birthday. My feelings about Adam and Batman haven't changed, except to grow stronger (thanks to my two-year-old grandson who loves Batman as much as I do--especially Adam's Batman), and I couldn't top what I wrote then, so, please follow this link to read it. ReplyDeleteAs our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends, with his passing a part of us passes, a piece of our youth and childhood ends with him. We suddenly learn our childhood has ended when a hero of our youth passes away. We learn the hard way that no one lives forever. It is a lousy thing to learn the hard way. We mourn with his loved ones even though most of us did not know him personally we still feel a kinship with him and will miss him.
Rest in peace Caped Crusader.
Got to meet the then 84 year old Adam West at Emerald City Comicon in 2013. I had never paid for an autograph before but happily forked over my $60 to have him sign my DVD of the Batman movie from the 60s. Burt Ward was there, too, so I had him sign ($50). The time spent was brief as they had to keep the line moving but I'm glad I got to spend a few minutes with someone who gave me such pleasure in my youth; and even today when I watch the reruns.

DeleteWhen I was a child I dreamed of being the Batman. . . And my sister was my Robin. We even imitated (with relative success) that episode in which the Dynamic Duo climbed "back to back" in a duct or chimmney to escape the villain of the occasion. Yes, Mr. West and the show itself made a lot to make my childhood a little better. And I must say that my LOVE for the hero began at this point , with the TV show and a few comic books of the time . For all this I say : Rest in Peace, Adam West. . . You will figure eternally among the HEROES !

ReplyDeleteI too am very saddened. I met Mr. West some years ago when he appeared at a Starlog store at one of the local malls. You should have seen the line of people who came to see him. Good thing I got there early. He will be missed.
