The Grooviest Covers of All Time: Bob Larkin Made Me Buy These!

Hey, hey, hey, Groove-ophiles! Artist Bob Larkin just had his 68th birthday this past Tuesday, so why don't we wish him a belated happy one by ooh-ing and ahh-ing over a few of his captivating covers from the good old Groovy Age? Larkin did tons of covers for paperbacks, merchandising, and other comic mag publishers, but it's his Marvel-ous covers that still turn Ol' Groove on! Here are some of my favorites (and yeah, the insides of these are pretty cool, too!)...

  2. Happy birthday, Bob! The Larkin covers comprised a lot of good memories in my teen years. Although I preferred the more Frazetta-ish covers of Boris Vallejo, a Bob Larkin fronted magazine was always a welcome presence on the newstand.

  3. Pity these kind of magazines aren't still around on the newsstand.

  4. Bob Larkin painted the cover to several of Marvel's prose novels in the 1970s. His cover to Mayhem in Manhattan is still one of my all-time favorite images of Spider-Man.

  6. That Hulk! cover started my fascination with that magazine when I was about 13, whenever I could find it. I remember when I bought it, the old lady at the counter said something like, 'Why would anyone want to buy garbage like that?' Ha such good selling technique!

As for the rest of ya, the purpose of this blog is to (re)introduce you to the great comics of the 1970s. If you like what you see, do what I do--go to a comics shop, bookstore, e-Bay or whatever and BUY YOUR OWN!
