The Boys from Derby: "The Genius Plant" by Cuti and Staton

What it is, Groove-ophiles! We're only a few short weeks away from the dazzling debut of Charlton Arrow Vol. 2, No. 1 featuring the return of E-Man and Nova! To celebrate, let's truck on back to April 1975 for E-Man #9 and "The Genius Plant!" This one has it all! A powered-up Nova! Teddy Q.! A cool, painted cover ('Cause Charlton had learned that painted covers were cheaper to print than standard comicbook covers! Who'd'a thunk it?)! Mike Mauser! General Dove (who looked like a cross between George C. Scott and Sarge from Sad Sack)! Scientists with big heads! And a villain who used the same tailor as The Red Ghost during the 70s * (talkin' 'bout the one RG wore in Defenders #'s 7-8)! This should hold ya until co-creators Nick Cuti and Joe Staton give us a brand new E-Man and Nova adventure next month!

*Here's The Red Ghost's costume for comparison...mebbe they were related?

  1. Nova has a "super Peg Bundy" vibe going with that hair. Cool stuff - thanks for the post, and all of the posts.

  2. These were the best ten comics of my childhood. It broke my heart when the eleventh issue never came out.

    1. To quote Smokey Robinson, "I second that emotion". Those 10 issues of E-Man are pretty much comic book perfection. I place them alongside the Lee/Kirby FF, Claremont/Byrne/Austin X-Men and Engelhart/Rogers/Austin Detective as one of the greatest runs in comic book history. Very impressive for a third rate company with horrible production values.

  3. Beauty! The awesomeness of E-Man was a beacon in the Bronze Age. Hopefully we'll get a new taste soon from Charlton Neo and AC Comics.

As for the rest of ya, the purpose of this blog is to (re)introduce you to the great comics of the 1970s. If you like what you see, do what I do--go to a comics shop, bookstore, e-Bay or whatever and BUY YOUR OWN!
