Science Fiction Theater: The Invisible Man

Cover by Jim Steranko, story adaptation by Ron Goulart, art by Val Mayerik (his first full-length story, by the way) and Dan Adkins (Mayerik's mentor), Supernatural Thrillers #2 (November 1972) is a real treasure, Groove-ophiles! Of course novelist/satirist/historian Goulart does a far-out job of adapting the H.G. Wells sci-fi classic (with healthy nods to James Whales' also-classic flick featuring Claude Rains), and Mayerik really shines with his quirky figure work and attention to detail. Looking at this, it's no wonder Val became one of Marvel's most popular horror/fantasy artists, making his mark on Man-Thing, Frankenstein's Monster, Thongor, Howard the Duck, The Living Mummy, and many others!

  1. Jim Steranko was just awesome. Here is my GMail account too if you still need it for Red Nails. Send me a heads up at uranium.cafe@yahoo.com to look for it. That mails gets loads of stuff from my youtube account, I have about 400 unread mails there. Comments on videos and stuff.

Have you ever seen all of the Steranko adaptation of Outland, the Sean Connery film? I have only seen samples.

  2. Ahh....Supernatural Thrillers! Yes.....I bought the first 7 issues or so of this title off the stands and really enjoyed them. Marvel was so much fun during this period.....so many short-lived titles!

  4. Bill, I sent the scans to ya Saturday. I have seen parts of Steranko's Outland adaptation, and I'll be covering it in Blinded Me with Comics sometime, you can bet on it!

Chris, I loved the Roy Thomas era of Marvel for all the experimental stuff they did. Not only titles, but formats as well. It's a shame they didn't give some of these mags a little more time to catch on.

  5. One of my all time favorite stories & comics of that era. I've always loved the Invisible man & the Wolfman both tied as my favorite Universal monster movies. This adaptation by Roy & Val Mayerik rocked! Oh ya that Jim Steranko cover was pretty cool too! I heard the original cover art is in a museum some where too.
